Carter Federal Credit Union is concerned about member privacy and security and has enabled two-factor authentication for all Internet Account Access accounts.
FFIEC/NCUA rules mandate that the credit union provide online members with two-factor authentication. When signing into Internet Account Access, you may be asked to provide the answer to one of the challenge/response questions you created when signing up for Internet Account Access. You will only be asked a challenge/response question when you are logging in from a new location or IP Address.
Two-factor authentication helps prevent phishing. “Phishing” is a form of Internet fraud that aims to steal information such as credit cards, social security numbers, user IDs and passwords.
For instance, a fake website is created that is similar to that of a legitimate organization, typically a financial institution such as a bank, credit union or insurance company. An email is sent requesting that the recipient access the fake website (which will usually be a “cut-and-pasted” replica of a trusted site) and enter their personal details, including security access codes. The page looks genuine, because it is easy to fake a valid web site. Any HTML page on the web can be modified to suit a phishing scheme.
Currently there are a number of phishing scams on a nationwide basis. These scams involve emailed messages that attempt to trick you into providing credit card and other information. All will contain website links that direct you to pages requesting your personal information. Please DO NOT respond to email from the NCUA (National Credit Union Administration), CUNA Mutual, and agencies of the US government. The credit union and these organizations will never ask for personal or account information by email. Never log into your credit union account directly from a link inside emailed messages.
It is important that you review both your statements of account and online history periodically to insure that transactions are valid. Internally, the credit union will also be monitoring for any indications of fraudulent activities. Steps have been taken to provide stronger security for all member related information. This includes the installation of new applications controls, two-factor authentication and physical controls.
